Mimi (she.they) is a queer, mixed-race, Japanese-American parent of twins who writes beyond the binaries of Asian and white, gay and straight, blind and seeing. Her work has recently appeared in Hippocampus, Catapult, MUTHA magazine, among others. Her creativity has been supported by several Minnesota State Arts Board grants. Her essay “There Are Girls Like You in Japan” has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She is currently working on a memoir “Almost: Essays from an Almost Asian, Almost Lesbian, Almost Blind, Almost Mom” and a YA novel about a queer teen living in a Japanese-American internment camp during WWII. She also has two children’s picture books in the works. She holds an M.A. in Literary and Cultural Theory from Carnegie Mellon and a doctorate from the University of Iowa. She lives in the Twin Cities. Member of SCBWI.
